After 5 years of chasing the title of Ashford and Weald District Football Champions the Year 11 football team finally brought the trophy back to Swadelands. After losing out in the final in years 7,8 and 9 all against Norton Knatchbull School and not making it to the finals in year 10 they again made it to the final in year 11 after a near faultless league campaign of 5 wins and 1 draw. The draw was against the team they were to meet in the final, Homewood School.

Leading up to the game the squad were supports by the School’s academy football coaches Tony Browne and Lee Radford who led 2 training sessions for the squad in the week leading up to the final.

On the day of the final the squad showed an outstanding level of motivation, commitment and composure despite trailing 1-0 at half time. In the second half Mitchell Wells took advantage of a mistake from an otherwise near perfect defensive display from Homewood before bearing down on goal and coolly finishing past the onrushing goalkeeper. Swadelands then began to dominate although a number of fine saves from keeper Daniel Smith and countless tackles from the outfield players limited opportunities for Homewood.

At 1-1 when the full time whistle blew the title was to be decided by penalties, superbly calm spot kicks from Lewis Fuller, Lee Dehara and Callum Smith started proceedings well for Swadelands before an excellent stop by Daniel Smith gave us a real advantage. Goalscorer Mitch Wells then scored his before Declan Burden finished off a 5/5 star penalty performance from the squad.

After losing 5-0 in the year 9 final 2 years ago the team could’ve easily lost enthusiasm for school football but true determination, hard work and a great deal of footballing ability showed as they brought the trophy back this year in their final game of school football. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the boys that have played for the school over the 5 years even if they did not play on the finals day, and all the parents that have stood on the sidelines with me and travelled all over Kent for matches come rain or shine, win or lose, as quoted by one of the parents at the end of the game ‘it’s about time!’.

The match day squad were: Daniel Smith, Charlie Eve, Mitch Wells, Charlie Jones, Charly Uburgs, Sean Corps, Lewis Fuller, Callum Smith, Connor Robbins, Jack Tomlin, Lee Dehara, Hiway Zrori, Adam Heathcote, Bradley Humphrey, Declan Burden and Antonio Puig Miguel.

Staff and sixth form students, yet again, wore purple to raise awareness of epilepsy. Purple Day is an international grassroots effort dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy worldwide. On March 26th annually, people in countries around the world are invited to wear purple and host events in support of epilepsy awareness. Epilepsy affects over 50 million people worldwide and one in ten of us will experience at least one seizure in our lifetime.

Purple Day was founded in 2008, by nine-year-old Cassidy Megan of Nova Scotia, Canada, Cassidy chose the colour purple after the international colour for epilepsy, lavender. The lavender flower is also often associated with solitude, which is representative of the feelings of isolation many people affected by epilepsy and seizure disorders often feel. Cassidy’s goal is for people with epilepsy everywhere to know they are not alone
